History

SSM Health
Founded by the Sisters of Saint Mary in 1900, the hospital - originally known as Mount Saint Rose Throat and Chest Hospital - provided specialized care for people suffering from tuberculosis. It was here that the world's first collapsed lung therapy was administered in 1914. Through the years, the hospital expanded its programs and services to meet the changing needs of patients in the greater St. Louis community. Specialized physical therapy services were incorporated by the mid-60s and in 1972, a dedicated rehabilitation center was opened at the hospital.

In 1980, the name of the facility was changed to Saint Mary on the Mount Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. Just six years later, the hospital became known as SSM Health Rehabilitation Institute, and subsequently, SSM Health Rehab, which provided inpatient rehabilitation services at two locations: SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - St. Louis and SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital - St. Charles.

Select Medical
Co-founded by Rocco A. and Robert A. Ortenzio in 1996, Select Medical began as a regional provider of outpatient physical rehabilitation.

More than 20 years later, Select Medical encompasses four areas of expertise: critical illness recovery, inpatient medical rehabilitation, outpatient physical therapy and occupational medicine, all of which are delivered and supported by more than 46,000 talented health care professionals across the U.S. Despite its record growth, Select Medical remains true to its founding principles of clinical quality and operational excellence.

Also, as part of this partnership, the existing 18 SSM Rehab and 15 Select Physical Therapy outpatient centers in the region joined together to operate  as SSM Health Physical Therapy.

With the scope of programs and services available, SSM Health Rehabilitation Network collaborates with every patient to effectively meet their individual needs and rehabilitation goals.
