Women's Health

  • SSM Health Physical Therapy’s Women’s Health Program strongly believes in treating each patient as a whole person- mentally, emotionally and physically. As such, we treat these conditions both behaviorally and therapeutically. After medical examination by a physician, our therapists will customize a program for each patient's specific needs.

    What to Expect 

    While every patient will have an individualized plan, therapy may consist of many different treatment approaches, including:

    • Comprehensive evaluation of lumbar spine, as well as abdominal and pelvic floor musculature
    • Techniques to train the bladder through behavior modification
    • Evaluation of fluids and dietary intake, as well as bowel and bladder habits
    • Suggestions for reducing bladder and bowel irritability
    • Pelvic floor muscle training for strengthening or downtraining through biofeedback or relaxation techniques
    • Accessory muscle training, including abdomen and hips
    • Techniques to assist with pain relief
    • Positions to assist with labor & delivery
    • Instruction for lifting & carrying a baby

    Our Women’s Health program provides treatment for the following conditions, which may include:

    • Bowel & Bladder, including urinary stress and urge incontinence, as well as constipation and defecatory dysfunction including fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse
    • Obstetric, including prenatal and post-partum conditions, as well as abdominal rehabilitation following diastasis rectus
    • Post-Surgical, including adhesion and scar tissue release post-hysterectomy, cesarean section, laparoscopy, abdominal repair and post-surgical diastasis repair
    • Pelvic Pain Disorders, including chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS),  pelvic and genital pain,  dyspareunia, interstitial cystitis,  endometriosus,  vulvodynia, and vestibulitis
    • Neurovascular Conditions, including pudendal neuralgia,  carpal tunnel syndrome, overactive bladder and multiple sclerosis
    • Musculoskeletal, including sacroiliac dysfunction, coccydynia, piriformis syndrome,  sciatica, low back pain, fibromyalgia, and injury recovery and sports medicine
    • Perimenopause & Post-Menopausal Wellness, inlcuding osteopenia, and osteoporosis

    Through this program, we also include treatment that is focused on Men's Health (Richmond Heights, Fenton, Creve Coeur-City Place and Columbia, IL locations only), including:

    • Post-prostatectomy pelvic floor rehabilitation
    • Male urinary/fecal incontinence
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Pelvic pain
    • Breast health
